My Etsy shop (http://mintage.etsy.com), mintage designs was created to welcome anyone to drop in and take a peek into my little art world. My background, living in this (Vancouver) culturally-diverse city, and my travels abroad, contribute to the imaginings that ultimately find themselves into my work.
Vancouver is a city of both urban and very natural elements. It is a place where cultures mix and mingle, where east meets west. Stories of long-ago immigrants are whispered in the rain… gleaming glass buildings sprout from the sea. These themes and contradictions, strong or subtle, may be found in my pieces. My rainscapes series is inspired of course from this wonderfully wet place!
I enjoy using bold images and colours, and incorporating textures and layers, using unexpected materials such as rice paper, foil, thread, etc. Ideas sprout when I'm at the office, on the bus, meandering along roads, etc... they sometimes get jotted down in my agenda (I should really be carrying around a small sketch book!)... even scratching down ideas and thinking about what it could turn into makes me happy!

I've lived in London and in Paris, and am now settled (for the next little while) back in Vancouver. I love this city, but definitely miss tasting the different cultures abroad. My little 21 month old keeps me busy though… his name is Sebastien, not named after anyone in particular… I just love how it sounds! After he goes to bed, and my partner and I have shared our dessert (he a lemon sorbet, and me coconut gelato), I bring out my art supplies and make a mess in our tiny kitchen. It all of course has to be cleaned up by the end of the night as we have to have somewhere to prepare breakfast the next morning! It all goes back in the pantry until my next art session. I love making art, but definitely don't have the space to do it full time! We live in a 850 sq ft 1 bedroom + den apartment… it IS a lovely part of the city we live though… a hop to the sea wall to watch the ducks float by and a skip to the local japanese restaurant (there are at least 4 or 5 within walking distance!) for our favourite wild salmon sushi… This is a link to my flickr account if anyone's interested in sneaking more of a peek into my little art world… http://www.flickr.com/photos/mintage/

Artist statement ~


I'm a fun-loving, creative, hard-working, animal loving, active 45-year-old country gal living in Kentucky who goes by the name of Tamora Bartlett. I absolutely love all animals which spawned my love of doing pet portraits for people of their favorite pets. I'm bad about rescuing any animal I think needs rescuing and luckily married a man who is as bad as I am about it, so we have a full assortment of pets on our little farm. To tell the truth, I have what I call "craft ADD." That means I love learning and doing all sorts of new crafts and arts and pretty much have done most of them, so I love to change around and experiment and sometimes incorporate crafts together, i.e. my mixing polymer clay, beadwork, and hand painting on jewelry items. I am constantly coming up with ideas in my head for new things and just hard to find the time to get to them all since I work a full time job as a medical transcriptionist also, but I keep on trying. I hope to continue to make people happy with what I create. It feels great to be able to produce something special and one of a kind for someone to enjoy.

1) What made you choose Etsy?

I'd seen the name Etsy on Craftster a lot and, after researching it, determined it was the largest and more well-established self-service online craft retail outlet.

2) How did you choose your name?

"Out of the Pink Sky" is a lyrics from a song called "Mercury Towers" by a band called Hex. People conscious of music in the 1980s might remember a band called The Church who had a minor hit with "Under the Milky Way." Anyway, Hex was a side project of their lead singer. "Mercury Towers" is a beautiful song that reminds me of good memories.

3) If you were stuck on a long road trip and could only listen to one cd, what would it consist of?

I can usually fit around 16 songs on a mixed CD. Well, I'd buy freedom from debt. After that, a house.

Only at craft shows where I happen to be vending.

6) Best part of your day?

The early evening when my husband and I get home from work. It's nice to unwind, have dinner, and watch "Malcolm in the Middle" and "The Simpsons" (or, currently, the Olympics)

1. What made you choose Etsy?

I had a customer at my very first art fair ask me if I was on etsy. At the time I wrote down the etsy address and a few months later when the busiest part of my art fair season was over I checked it out. I loved the quirkiness of items being sold so I was hooked as a buyer. I had no web presence then and limited time to work on creating my own site so it was a perfect fit for me.

2. How did you choose your name?

I had so much fun thinking up a name for my business! My name came along well before my etsy shop. When I decided to officially turn my jewelry skills into a business, I wanted something that was a play on words and reflected my location. The phrase "reckless abandon" kept coming into my head so once I replaced the "reckless" with "rural" - Rural Abandon Jewelry was born! I have to admit, when I told my family the name it was met with blank stares all around. I had to explain to them my play on words but in the end I decided to stick with it. I love it and I am extra happy when a person walks up to my booth at an art fair, reads the name and says "How clever! I love your name."

3. If you were stuck on a long road trip and could only listen to one cd, what would it consist of?

This is really hard! I tend to listen to one CD over and over again for months then I put it away and revive it months or years later. Currently I have given the Magnolia soundtrack another go.

4. If you won the Lotto, whats the first thing you'd buy?

This is easy! I would buy a new house. I love the house I own now but it isn't perfect...I would be especially excited to have a larger bedroom with a walk-in closet and master bath.

5. Can your products be found anywhere else?

I keep a blog at http://ruralabandon.blogspot.com. I am currently showing work in 4 galleries in Iowa and Illinois and travel during the summer and fall to juried art fairs throughout the Mid-west.

6. Best part of your day?

The best part of my day is my wake up call. It usually consists of my 5 year old daughter climbing on my bed and giving me a big hug.

I heard of Etsy when It was just starting out. when I first joined I was not very sucessful, but then I met a local artist (from Atlanta) who also sells on Etsy (www.distilledrose.etsy.com) and she encouraged me to jump in again, she gave me some great tips and now I'm addicted to Etsy.

2. How did you choose your name?

My shop name is RoccaDesigns which is a combination of my name and my husband's.

3. If you were stuck on a long road trip and could only listen to one cd, what would it consist of?

I'm hispanic, and I love fast paced rythms. anything I can dance and move to really would be good.

4. If you won the Lotto, whats the first thing you'd buy?

I would buy a new house.

5. Can your products be found anywhere else?

6. Best part of your day?

At night when I put my kids to bed and I can work on my stuff.
